Yu Shan Liu is from Taiwan. She holds a PhD degree in hospitality management program at Iowa State University and a master's degree in hospitality program at Oklahoma State University. She is a currently assistant professor in the department of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Xiamen University. Her research interests are in the human resource management field, especially employment practices, motivation, leadership, organization behaviors, and service quality management. Her dissertation research used a mixed method to (1) explore employees' motives for working in the hospitality industry and (2) examine how employees' work motives relate to their organizational behaviors and attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors). A manuscript based on her dissertation entitled "Development and validation of a work motive measurement scale" has been accepted by the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, which is scheduled to be published in IJCHM 28 (5) 2016.

As an instructor, she not only delivers knowledge by expanding upon the textbook but also shares her real-world learning and business experiences along with her perspectives on relevant topics, theories, and issues in her field.  She is an Asian and educated in Confucianism, but she also experienced the Western teaching style when she pursued her master's and doctoral degrees in the United States. Based on her educational background, she is able to balance these two educational systems successfully and provides a diverse learning environment for her students. As it is said in the Analects of Confucius, "If three walk together, one can be my teacher." This means all of us have something to learn from others. The Western teaching style encourages students to participate as individuals and provide feedback to each other. This is why she values class discussions, because her goal is for everyone in her classroom to learn from each other. She also enjoys guiding individuals to become leaders who will be creative, visionary, independent, courageous, and inspiring in any position they hold in their lifetime. Her motto is “Actions speak louder than words.” She strives to be a good model for her students, so that they can learn from her diversity, professionalism, and sincerity. Teaching is most meaningful for her, and she choses it as her career, because though she may not change the world, she can impact people around her by what she believes about education.
